L’ouverture du grand festival off « Fiesta Sète » a Balaruc-Les-Bains.

English - Les Ballyshannons through the years

Our adventure

The adventure started in 2002 when Jerome returned from a holiday in Ballyshannon County Donegal, and founded the band “The Bumblebees”.  Full of passion and enthusiasm for irish music, Jerome lead the band through ups and downs and the comings and goings of various band members, until in 2005 when Jerome invited Alison to join the then current members:  Patrice (guitar) Fabien and Jean Lucian (fiddles) Brigitte,(voice and accordion) Gilles (bass) and Jerome himself (Voice, guitar and mandolin).  The years passed, the sound evolved, the repertoire expanded, more and more concerts were happening.

There have been many Highlights:

A highlight in itself - We managed to play 5 concerts either side of the worst of the COVID Pandemic in 2020
then in 2021 after a virtual concert on the radio we took off with 10 concerts throughout the season before things got difficult again!
In 2021 Guest fiddler Kate Simpson thrilled the public and the groupe with her unique self taught classical celtic fusion style
In 2018 The students of the Lycee Rene Goss in Clermont performed with Les Ballyshannons as part of their irish project.
The project expanded in 2019, the students performed again with the band and wrote a song upon return from their trip to Ireland
In 2014 came Fiesta sete, then delighted in 2016 the band were invited back as “Tullybrook”with their lovely guest harpist Severine.
In 2013 Julian Pentz, Togmor’s fiddler made a guest appearance in Loupian.  Julian now plays with Palmerston, a well known English folk band.
In 2012 the band Played at Beauzelle with 3 fiddlers!
Sharing the stage with Togmor in Montpeyroux in 2008.
Les Nuits de Gignac,  playing alongside Tri Yann and The Churchfitters in 2007.

Les Ballyshannons today

What’s great about Les Ballyshannon’s music is the variety.  The seeds of the band lie undoubtedly in the irish tradition, a lively mix of irish jigs, reels, polkas, and hornpipes and but they play their our own repertoire adding a wee tincture of Scottish, a smattering of American, a drop of English folk, and sometimes a little rock, all rounded off with the odd ballad to rest the ears, rejuvenate the toes and replenish the soul.  It’s refreshingly different, good natured fun!

The band members have a love of other musics as well as irish, ranging through rock and blues, country, jazz, folk, even classical.    More recently, pieces by some of the band’s favorite well known artists have inspired their own interpretations.  And here they are today, still bringing the joy of Celtic music to local audiences in the midi.  They promise themselves to continue as long as it’s fun and fortunately they say “it still is, in fact, the adventure is really only just beginning………….”

The Current Line up

Alison – After dabbling in the guitar in her early years, the flute captured her interest in her late twenties. After moving to France, through local jazz workshops and meeting other musicians, the idea of playing more seriously started to become a reality, so when Jerome, asked Alison to join Ballyshannon, there was no hesitation, First singing then adding flute, bodhran and whistles!  Ballyshannon became Les Ballyshannons and the sound we recognize today was in the making!

Mike (guitare, mandolin, chant).  Joined the group in 2013.  A multi-instrumentalist and composer, Mike has one foot in Rock N Roll, the other in the irish tradition inspire by his time in Coleraine.  Mike has played and still plays other styles and tastefully brings fresh rhythms and cords to the bands arrangements.  Mike also plays Solo, duo (Troubadelic) and trio (Kool Kat).

Lazare (fiddle mandolin & suitcase !)  Coming from a classical background, Lazare spent several years in the Southampton symphonique orchestra. Lazare developped his fiddle style in the pubs of England and Ireland and enjoyed a short stint in world music in India with the group Oikyataan.  Lazare joined Les Ballyshannons in 2015.

Oliver  with his passion and knowledge on the technical side, completes the group with sound and lighting.

Good Memories

There’s been a lot of fun and there are many fond memories:
Many a good gig was enjoyed with Jerome, Patrice and Gilles, but a couple of years after Alison joined, there were also many changes.
Fabien, Jean Lucian and Brigitte left in 2007 and Aurelia et Benjamin passed through for a few months playing fiddle.  Jacques, a legend in Cajun music of Mousse Espangnol fame also joined the band this year playing  fiddle, banjo, and cornamuse.  Jacques stayed until 2018.
Jacotte Recolin who now plays with Zoulouzbek Band & Macadam Bazar, played fiddle in the band from 2008 – 2010.
Between 2010 and 2012, the band enjoyed the talents of 2 amazing fiddlers, Paul Oliver who now plays with Bal O’gadjo, Maika, Qualam, Daraba, and Sylvain Rabourdin who now plays with Zorozora and Azed Trio.
Patrice and Gilles left in 2012 and three bass players passed through in the years that followed: Ludo (2012 – 2013) Franck (2014 – 2015) Benjamin (2015 – 2017) Candido (2017 - 2019)
It was a sad moment indeed when Jerome group founder left the band in 2015.
Severine lovely guest harpist played with the band under their alias “Tullybrook” at Fiesta Sete in 2016.

French - Les Ballyshannons par travers les années

Notre aventure

Mike - (guitare, mandoline, chant).

Lazare - (violon, mandoline, valise!)
